Section Overview
Section Number: 80
Section Title: Dowry Death
Act: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS)
Status: Active
Applicability: Applicable throughout India in cases where a married woman dies due to burns, bodily injury, or under abnormal circumstances within seven years of marriage, and evidence shows that she was subjected to cruelty or harassment in connection with dowry demands shortly before her death.
Dowry death is one of the most serious offences relating to women in India. BNS Section 80 seeks to combat the social evil of dowry by imposing stringent punishment on husbands and relatives who harass women for dowry and whose actions ultimately result in the woman's death.
The law creates a presumption against the husband or his relatives when specific legal conditions are fulfilled, making prosecution more effective in such cases.

-
Death should occur due to burns, bodily injury, or abnormal circumstances.
-
